The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
Teenaged high school students may have very little in common with their parents, their grandparents or even their great grandparents. But if there is one thing that can breech the generation gap, it is that very few of them enjoyed studying the works of William Shakespeare in school. Although the Bard’s themes and stories echo through the ages, his language can be challenging to understand. But Central High School students are up to this challenge! This April, CHS Drama will present the hilarious play The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield.
In a matter of 100 minutes or less, students will perform portions of all 37 plays in a fast paced and original show. Titus Andronicus is presented as a cooking show, Othello is performed in rap lyrics, and all the Histories are presented as a football game. By mixing the Shakespearian language with modern language and themes, humor, improv and local color, The Complete Works will probably teach you more about the Bard than any high school class ever did! Come and see Romeo and Juliet fall in love (sort of) and watch EVERYONE die (messily) in Hamlet. This is a show that will bring all the generations together and leave them laughing!
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) will have two performances on Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th at 7pm in the Central High School auditorium located at 1 Lincoln Blvd, Bridgeport, CT. Tickets are $6 when purchased in advance and $8 the day of the show. All proceeds to benefit Central High School Theatre.

Students at Central High School in Bridgeport will be putting on their first musical in six years.. BRIDGEPORT — Dressed in Caribbean garb and seated at the rear of Central High School's auditorium, Shantell Kelly barked directions at a cast in the throes of a dress rehearsal. "I can't really hear you all!" shouted the 17-year-old senior, who isn't the director, but one of the lead performers in "Once on this Island," the school's first musical production in six years. "I like both" roles, confessed Kelly, who helped Kyle Mencel, the Drama Club president, lead the cast through warmups Wednesday afternoon, while Annie Lee, the faculty adviser, was in a staff meeting. "I worried about how this show would go over, but these students have been great. They're a gifted group," said Lee when she arrived at the rehearsal. A first-year English teacher, Lee graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a passion for theater, and felt it was time to bring musicals back to the Central stage. Written by Lynn Aherns and Stephen Flaherty, "Once on this Island" ran on Broadway in the early 1990s. It tells the story of a peasant who falls in love with a rich man. She's black, he's white. Lee was familiar with the play, having directed it a few years ago. She thought it appropriate for Central since several Drama Club members are natives of Caribbean nations. "It also deals with issues we experience here in Bridgeport every day," said Lee. There is a 32-person cast for the production. Besides Kelly, other principal roles are played by Bryan Deliz, Robin Rudd, Melonie Atkins and Khallid Graham. Mencel, 17, a senior whose character is Papa Ge, said he enjoys the challenge of the play as well as helping with the production. "I'm an actor, not a singer, but I like it," he said. The Drama Club, established last year, is planning two spring one-act plays, a talent show and will compete in an Improvisational Olympics. Kelly, who has performed in a number of Central productions, loves helping to pull together the singing, acting and dancing for the show. "I think we're ready," she said, turning her attention for a moment from the stage. Student performers take direction well from student directors, she added, as long as the director has an authoritative voice and doesn't go overboard. "You have to make it fun. Otherwise, they think you're horrible," she said. "Once on this Island" will be performed at Central High School, 1 Lincoln Blvd., at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets cost $5 for students and $8 for adults.

Students make their own magic in 'Wiz'

BRIDGEPORT — Tornadoes in Kansas, snow in Connecticut — it's all the same to a Central High School acting troupe who, weather permitting, hopes to showcase a semester's worth of hard work in a production of "The Wiz" this weekend.
"These kids are amazing. They've worked so hard," Annamarie Lee, a teacher and adviser to Central High's Drama Club, said Wednesday during what turned out to be — with classes canceled Thursday by snow — a final dress rehearsal before debuting tonight.
Lee, who has been working to rebuild the drama program at Central, has assembled a cast of 26 and crew of 20. As late as two weeks ago, some parts were still being cast as some students found it too difficult to juggle the intense rehearsal schedule with schoolwork.
As it was, Porsha Williams, a senior playing the brain-challenged scarecrow, couldn't get a looming psychology test off her mind as she eased on down the stage in a red straw hat.
"This is my dream role," said Williams, who remembers as a young child watching Michael Jackson in the role. "He made it seem so exciting. I think this is the greatest thing I've ever done."
She said the biggest challenge for her has been to learn how to stay focused and make time for schoolwork, the play and other after-school activities.
"I know at the end it's going to feel so great," she said.
Robin Rudd, 17, another senior, plays Dorothy. Although she's had leading roles in other productions, this is the first time she's been the lead.
"It's good. Though I'll tell you now, the snow is not my friend," she said.
Lee took a minimalist approach when it came to scenery for the production.
"I want the kids to shine through because they're amazing actors. They can make the show with no scenery and few props," she said.
The Emerald City, for instance, is represented by green-tinted shades worn by its citizens.
This production also marks the premiere of $30,000 worth of lighting and sound equipment on the Central stage.
Lee chose "The Wiz" because it was the choice of many seniors in the troupe, who last year helped her to revive the Drama Club.
"It's a perfect show for them," Lee said. A modern retelling of the "Wizard of Oz," with a bit of an attitude, "The Wiz" features music that is upbeat and catchy.
Still, even with a simple set, the production involves enormous effort.
In rehearsals since Columbus Day weekend, the production has two student assistant directors, Lynnette Repollett and Hannah Vollenweider, and an assistant student choreographer, Biana Alejos.
Repollett and Alejos both pull double duty for the show, with the former portraying Eviline the Bad Witch and the latter as Glinda the Good Witch.
"The Wiz" will be performed at Central High School, 1 Lincoln Blvd. — weather permitting — at 7:30 p.m. today and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. If the tonight's performance is canceled by the storm, it will be rescheduled for next Thursday.
